Elected for inclusion 1969-1970 edition of “Who’s Who Among College Students in American Universities and Colleges.” Member of Tau Beta Pi, National Engineering Honor Society. Student member of the IEEE.
Associate of Arts in Electronic Technology: Orange Coast College, Costa Mesa, California (1964-66). Graduated Salutatorian out of 1,000. Graduated also with “Technician Certificate” and won an award given by the Instrument Society of America for a technical paper.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
November 2003 to present: Consulting EMI/EMC/ESD/EMP Engineer. Responsibilities: Perform analysis of systems, subsystems and LRU’s; provide technical design guidance to project engineers, present seminars, and assist in troubleshooting to provide solutions to EMI/EMC/ESD/EMP problems.
August 1996 to April 1998 & August 2000 to October 2003: LAIRD TECHNOLOGIES (was formerly INSTRUMENT SPECIALTIES CO., INC), Placentia, California. Title: West Coast EMC Manager and Principal Scientist. Responsibilities: Supervised/managed a group of 10 people and the test facility. Provided technical guidance and training to the staff. As a principal scientist, I assist sales/marketing in talking to potential customers and present technical seminars. Perform consulting work (design and troubleshooting) to clients as requested on their projects in both EMI/EMC/EMP/ESD and RF design. Assist and guide in-house design and development projects as well as do research into future shielding materials and product directions. Am familiar and have used FDTD and TLM computational analysis programs.
August 1999 to August 2000: GARWOOD LABORATORIES, INC, Placentia, California. Title: Director of EMC Technical Services & Consultant. Responsibilities: Provided technical guidance and support to the EMI test laboratory. Present EMI/EMC/ESD/EMP seminars and training courses to both in-house personnel and clients. Gave technical design guidance and performed troubleshooting as requested by clients on their project. Also provided marketing strategy and direction for Garwood’s EMI test business such as NEBS and Bluetooth.
April 1998 to August 1999 & February 1994 to August 1996: SARA, INC., Huntington Beach, California. Title: EMI/EMC/EMP/ESD Specialist. Responsibilities: Provided technical support on various R&D projects to outside customers both military and commercial. I was a co-developer of the CASSPER system. Co-ordinated testing and test facilities, performed marketing, presented seminars, did analysis, troubleshooting and tests from the system level to the detailed board level in the EMI/ESD/EMP/EMF areas. Also involved in doing RF design and development in RFID, wireless products and in-flight entertainment systems. Also responsible for product safety, facilities safety and quality assurance. Primary author of a shielding design guideline manual for the Army and EMI consultant to the Air force’s Space and Missile Command on their COTS program.
January 1993 to November 1993: SYNOPTICS COMMUNICATIONS (now called Nortel Networks), Santa Clara, California. Title: Sr. Technical Specialist. Responsibilities: Provided technical training and supported designers to avoid EMI problems during the design stage including printed circuit board layout. Also tested systems and performed troubleshooting to provide solutions for any EMI problems on LAN systems (Token Ring and Ethernet).
March 1989 to January 1993 & October 1985 to November 1986: NORTHROP CORPORATION, Pico Rivera, California. Title: Sr. Technical Specialist. Responsibilities: In-house consultant. Presented seminars to train the technicians and engineers on EMI/ESD/EMP and HM/HS. Reviewed test procedures and test results and assisted in troubleshooting to find potential EMI/EMP fixes. Also had the responsibility to organize the EMI lab to open it to outside customer testing. Monitored vendor testing, reviewed control plans and test procedures for EMI/EMP. Supervised four other engineers. Was responsible for static discharge concerns. Did some TEMPEST and HM/HS work.
December 1986 to March 1989 & June 1985 to October 1985: CONSULTANT EMI/EMC/EMP. Title: Consultant. Responsibilities: Provided EMI/EMC/EMP guidance and troubleshooting to both military and commercial clients. Wrote control plans, test procedures, test reports, design guidelines and presented technical seminars. Also did analysis and worked on static discharge problems. Worked on various products from medical to instrumentation to audio to computer equipment. Worked with clients to solve static discharge, FCC, MIL-STD-461/462 and VDE problems on their products. Reviewed PC board layouts for noise and have done line filter designs for power supplies and all types of systems.
October 1983 to June 1985: CENTURY DATA SYSTEMS (now out of business), Anaheim, California. Title Manager EMC. Responsibilities: Responsible for disk drive products meeting FCC and VDE requirements and static discharge. Conducted in-house seminars, wrote design guidelines and interfaced with customers on their EMI problems of our products.
November 1977 to October 1983: BASIC FOUR/MAI, Irvine, California. Title: Electronic Engineer. Responsibilities: Responsible for all aspects of static discharge and FCC/VDE for all types of computer products from the system level to the component level. Also did consulting to our suppliers and conducted in-house seminars. Also set up our own EMI facility. Did some product safety work, some low power switching converter design, wrote design guidelines and directed the work of one engineer and technician.
May 1974 to October 1977: HTL-K WEST (now part of Pacific Scientific), Santa Ana, California. Title: Electronic Engineer/Manager. Responsibility: Analog and digital design on low level signal amplifiers for thermocouples, strain gauges and accelerometers for space applications such as GPS and Space Shuttle. Responsible for three project engineers and budgeting, scheduling of group. Also in charge of all EMC work and am familiar with MIL-STD-461/462.
November 1969 to May 1974: PERTEC BUSINESS SYSTEMS (now out of business), Irvine, California. Title: Electronic Engineer. Responsibilities: Designed automatic and semi-automatic test equipment and linear power supplies. Did static discharge work on computer systems and made computer systems meet VDE requirements for noise emissions.
